Exploring the Health Benefits of Regular Papaya Seed Consumption

Social media users claim that regularly eating papaya seeds can reduce inflammation and may have anti-parasitic effects. Health experts agree they could be beneficial for your diet.

“Papaya seeds contain an enzyme called papain, which aids digestion and reduces gut inflammation,” said Antonette Hardie, MS, RDN, LD, a registered dietitian at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, in an interview with Verywell.

As a proteolytic enzyme, papain helps your body break down proteins. Research indicates that papain can alleviate digestive disorders and gastrointestinal issues.

Papain may also assist in wound healing post-injury by facilitating debridement - the removal of dead tissue from wounds.

In addition to papain, papaya seeds are rich in vitamin C, potassium, magnesium, calcium, and other nutrients essential for your well-being.

“They possess anti-inflammatory properties and contain numerous vitamins and minerals that enhance immunity and promote gut health,” Hardie noted.

Vitamin C boosts collagen production and immune function, potassium supports kidney and heart functions, magnesium regulates muscle and nerve activity, while calcium strengthens bones and teeth.

Papaya seeds might also help fight off parasites.

“A 2007 pilot study gave air-dried C. papaya seeds to 60 Nigerian children and examined their stool after consumption,” Dieras, DCN, RD, CDN, director of ambulatory nutrition services at Mount Sinai Health System, told Verywell.

The study indicated that papaya seeds were effective in treating parasites. Research also suggests they may have antibacterial properties.

“Papaya seeds are high in antioxidants, which can counteract oxidative stress and inflammation,” Dieras added.

Antioxidants found naturally in these seeds help delay or prevent various types of cell damage. Additionally, research indicates that papaya seeds could be a valuable source of natural antioxidants.

These seeds also contain phytochemicals - plant compounds with numerous health benefits. Hardie mentioned that papaya seeds may particularly benefit individuals with heart disease, arthritis, and certain cancers.

Despite their nutritious profile, some people should exercise caution before adding papaya seeds to their diet.

“Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, those with latex allergies, taking anticoagulant or antihypertensive medications, or having hyperglycemia should avoid consuming them,” Dieras advised.

If unsure about incorporating papaya seeds into your diet, experts recommend consulting a healthcare professional first. “Excessive consumption could lead to diarrhea and digestive discomfort,” Hardie warned.

Papaya seeds can be easily incorporated into various dishes like smoothies, sauces, salad dressings, and more. They offer antioxidants, anti-parasitic and anti-inflammatory properties, along with beneficial phytochemicals that contribute to better health.
