- Chia seeds are considered a superfood due to their high fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants content.
- A study suggests that ground chia seeds provide more nutrients than whole chia seeds.
- Experts maintain that whole chia seeds can still be easily digested since their outer layer dissolves when mixed with liquid.
Whole chia seeds can aid digestive wellness. However, the outer fiber layer may inhibit other nutrients' release and absorption, according to James Cowley, PhD, a co-author of the study from the University of Adelaide in Australia.
“Consume chia seeds either whole or ground—whatever you find most convenient to use,” Majumdar commented.
She noted that chia seeds become gel-like when mixed with water, which can slow digestion and help maintain feelings of fullness for longer.
